The general contractor you choose to build your remodel is critically important. A smart, talented, trustworthy contractor is key to finishing your project on time, within budget, and with results that meet or exceed your expectations. Considering the fact that there is no shortage of shady operators, how do you find a great contractor?
Do not hire a contractor who leaves a promotional door hanger on your front door or leaflet in your mailbox or who tries to drum up business door-to-door. These marketing methods are, for the most part, used by non-established, fly-by-night businesses and, in some cases, by scam artists.
Using the telephone directory to find a contractor is also a less-than-desirable option because contractors’ business listing ad budgets have very little to do with their talents. A display ad can communicate how long a contractor has been in business, which may be an indicator of success but not always. Other forms of local advertising, such as ads in local newspapers, also can indicate that a firm is an established business.
The best way to find a quality contractor is through personal recommendations from friends or neighbors who have had similar remodels done—particularly if those friends and neighbors understand and can recognize quality construction. Unfortunately, these kinds of recommendations are often hard to get. And contractors who are recommended by satisfied homeowners often have very full schedules.
So what should you do?
